Sash Window Services Preston, Lancashire & the North West!

Sash windows are an important part of a building's history and can be read like a book. They tell us not only of the changing architectural taste and style but also of social hierarchy, building economics, craft ingenuity and technical advances, and of the ways in which houses and certain building materials were taxed. They are the single element which most serves to establish the character of a building, and so, often, of a whole district. We also Replace or Repair Casement Windows, Side Casement Windows, Top Casement Windows, Hopper Windows, Fixed Windows, Yorkshire Sliders, Pivot Windows and Gothic Windows.

Sash Window Restoration & Renovation

Sash window restoration and renovation is the best way to maintain the look and feel of your original sash windows, without compromising on their durability or use. Many people would be surprised at some of the sash windows we can restore back to their original condition. This is by far the cheapest option and coupled with the bespoke draught-proofing system that we build in to our refurbishments you end up with a fully functional window with better heat conservation and noise reduction properties than before.

Any replacement splicing is carried out with timber of the same profile that exists on the window being worked on to ensure that it looks exactly as the original and corresponding windows did. Hardwood sill replacements where necessary also conform to the style of your existing windows.

Small areas of rot are dug out and filled with a two part epoxy wood filling system that is sanded to a smooth and even finish to replicate the existing contour.

A standard sash window refurbishment undertaken by Sash Windows Northwest Limited would comprise of the following:

Sash Window Removal from the Main Frame

Visual inspection of the sashes and box to identify necessary repairs as outlined on the quotation.

All timber repairs are completed to include, splicing, filling, re-glazing and sill repair or replacement as per the quotation.

All running surfaces of the box and sashes are sanded to ensure smooth operation of the window. They then receive a coat of primer for weather proofing protection and aesthetics.

The sashes are re-corded weighed and balanced to ensure that the existing weights are sufficient.

We then machine the sashes to accept our bespoke draught proofing system (see separate section for more detail).

On completion of all repairs the sashes are re-installed into the box and new staff bead, parting bead and hardware is fitted in accordance with the client's requirements.

The window is then tested for performance and the client is shown how to operate and maintain the newly refurbished window.

Sash Window Draught Proofing

Your home could be suffering up to 20% heat loss through inefficient heat conservation, and a large part of this may be via your windows. Run your hands around the window, if you can feel cold air coming in that means that the warm air you're paying to heat is escaping through those same gaps.

Some homeowners try their own draught proofing – using bits of newspaper, tacked on brush strips or self-adhesive foam on a roll – there are many DIY options but none of them are very effective, and they can often look unsightly too.

Our draught proofing process is extremely thorough and carried out by our experts trained in sash and casement window conservation. From an initial overview of the windows in your property we'll begin by removing the sashes from the frame and checking their integrity. Any repairs that are required will be made to both sashes and the box frame too.

At this point we use a procedure to add channels down the sides of each sash that will allow for the addition of a special draught proofing strip, and we'll add a new staff bead that incorporates further draught prevention measures. Any bare wood will be treated and the top sash will be replaced and checked for alignment before the parting bead is fitted, creating a flush finish as the bottom sash is replaced and checked for position and smooth operation.

We check each window for overall ease of operation, ensuring that the counterweights and pulley system are operating perfectly, together with sash movement and resting position.

Your sash windows will see a huge improvement in heat efficiency, no more gales blowing cold air and dust into your home, and of course you'll save money as your precious warmth won't be escaping. Another added benefit to our draught proofing system is that it eliminates almost all bumps and rattles from your sash windows, and noise levels from outside will diminish too.

Double Glazed Sash Windows

When requested we can offer to install new double glazed sashes into the original frames maintaining the original character of the window. We match the existing single glazed sashes by using the same rail sections and widths and copying the existing horn details. Externally we have an angled timber bead fitted to replicate the original putty pointing and internally we machine an ovolo mould to match the existing as close as possible.

If the replica sashes require glazing bars they can be manufactured down to a thickness of 20mm as per the original sashes.

We fit a 4-12-4 Pilkington K glass double glazed unit as a standard which has a typical U value of 2.0.

The additional weight of the sashes means that the original cast weights are unusable. Those are replaced with new lead weights to maintain the full height travel of the sashes.

Our sashes are manufactured from the un-assorted Swedish Redwood which leaves the factory glazed and primed. We can also manufacture from a selection of hardwoods where requested.
